Brakes
The braking system is a crucial component for maintaining control and safety in go-karting. Go-karts generally use either disc brakes or drum brakes, each with its own set of characteristics.
- Disc Brakes: Disc brakes are the most common type of brake system used in go-karts, especially in racing models. They consist of a rotor (disc) attached to the wheel and a caliper that squeezes brake pads against the rotor to slow down or stop the kart. Disc brakes provide excellent stopping power and heat dissipation, making them ideal for high-performance applications.
- Drum Brakes: Drum brakes are less common but can still be found in some recreational go-karts. They consist of a drum attached to the wheel and brake shoes that press against the inside of the drum to create friction and slow down the kart. Drum brakes are generally less expensive and simpler to maintain but offer lower performance and less effective heat dissipation compared to disc brakes.
Proper maintenance of the braking system is essential for ensuring safety and performance. Regular inspection of brake pads, rotors, and other components is necessary to identify wear and potential issues. Additionally, proper adjustment and bleeding of the brake system are important to maintain optimal braking performance.
